Montmorillonite - 
The structure unit of Montmorillonite Consist of gibbsite sheet sandwiched between two slical sheet. It is about 10Å thick. The bonding by vander waals forces between silica sheet of adjacent structural units is weak. Water and exchangeable catios can enter and separate the layers. So the soil containing this unit exhibits high shrinkage and swelling. It is a primary constituent of black cotton soil. The thickness of this particles varies from 10Å to 50Å and lateral dimension varies from 1000Å to 5000Å.
