Factor permeability of soil depends -
(1). Effect of size and shape of particles: -
Permeability varies approximately as the square of the grain size. Since soils consist of many different sized grains, some specific grain size has to be used for comparison. Allen Hazen , based on his experiment on filter sands of particle size between 0.1 and 3mm , found that the permeability can be expressed as

k = Coefficient of peremeability.

ii) Effect of properties of pore fluid:-
Permeability is directly proportional to the unit weight of water and inversely proportional to its viscosity. There is a great variation in viscosity with temperature hence when other factors remain constant , the effect of the property of water on the values of permeability can be expressed as

The structural arrangement of the particle may vary, at the same void ratio, depending upon the method of deposition of soil mass. The structure may be entirely different for a disturbed sample as compared to an undisturbed sample which may process stratification.
