Determination of plastic limit of soil -
About 30gm of soil sample passing through 425 micron is sieve is taken and some quanlity of distilled water is added and thoroughly mixed to from a soil paste which can be rolled into a ball between palms of hands. A small portion of the ball is then rolled on a smooth plate into a thread of 3mm diameter, and the thread is looked for signs of cracking. If no sign of cracking is found, then the soil mass definition again rolled between palms to reduce water content. Then the ball is rolled on smooth plate into a thread of 3mm diameter. A portion of the thread is taken for water content determination which gives the plastic limit.
